Abstract
This study analysed economics of sesame production among small scale famers in Southern Taraba State, Nigeria. Multi-stage sampling procedure was adopted for the study. A total 160 respondents formed the sample size. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Farm Budgeting Technique. The results of descriptive statistics revealed that majority of sesame farmers were within the age of 20 – 50 years accounted for 92.5% of the respondents with an average age of 43 years. The results also showed that 84% of the respondents were married. Also, 94.4%of the sesame farmers were literate and had 1-20 years of farming experience in sesame production while only 2.5% had 31-40 years of experience with an average experience of 13 years. The result further revealed that about 88.1% of the respondents had no access to credit. The result of farm budgeting techniques revealed that sesame production was a profitable venture in the study area with net farm income N 178, 123.8 per hectare. The profitability index was N3.30, implying that for every N1 invested in Sesame farming there was a return of N3.30. The poor access to credit, insecurity, lack of extension services were perceived by farmers to be the major hindrances to sesame production in the study area. It was recommended that the private sector and the government should work together to assist Sesame farmers have access to credit.
