Abstract
The study analyzed factors influencing adoption of improved groundnut varieties by women
farmers in southern part of Borno State, Nigeria. The main objective of the study wereto
describe the socio-economic characteristics of women farmers in the study area and factors
influencing likelihood of adoption of improved groundnut varieties by the women farmers.
Multi-stage sampling procedure was used to select respondents for the study. The primary data
for the study were collected using structuredquestionnaires administered to 340 respondents.
The data collected were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistical tools (logit
regression Model). The study revealed that, the mean age of the respondents was 40
years.54.7% of the respondents had formal education had 5.3% only formal education. The
average income among the respondents was ₦167,000. 55.9%most of the respondents were
small holder farmers as revealed by the average farm size of 1.5 hectares. The logit regression
model revealedthat the variables age,income per annum and access to credit were significant
at 1% level while marital status, educational level, household size, primary occupation ,
farming experience, farm size and extension contact and member ship cooperative society
were significant at 5%level influencing adoption of improved groundnut varieties in the study
area. The study recommended that women groundnut farmers in the study are should be
encouraged to participate in adult literacy class and go for large scale groundnut farming.
