Abstract
The continuous application of synthetic insecticides results in toxicity and contamination of
seeds with toxic residues, which poses a serious health hazard to man. Laboratory experiments
were conducted to test the toxicity and repellent activity of raw diatomaceous earth, leaf
powders of Eucalyptus and Melia in the control of Callosobruchus subinnotatus (Pic.) on
stored Bambara nut seeds under ambient laboratory conditions at a temperature of (29-33oC)
and relative humidity (44-56%). Three dose rates of each treatment was tested. Raw
diatomaceous earth, leaf powders of Eucalyptus and Melia were highly toxic to C. subinnotatus
evoking over 90% mortality in bambara nut seeds treated with the highest dose rates at 96 hours
after exposure. Also, all the plant powders (leaf powders of Eucalyptus and Melia) were highly
repellent to C. subinnotatus and the repellency was dose dependent. This study highlights an
opportunity to develop insecticides from natural products (raw diatomaceous earth, leaf
powders of Eucalyptus and Melia) and the potential of these as grain protectants is discussed.
