Abstract

The study analyzed allocative efficiency in small scale maize production in the guinea savannah region, Nigeria. One hundred and twenty small scale maize producers were randomly selected for the study. Data were collected using structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using stochastic frontier cost function. The result revealed that in the cost frontier, the sigma square is 0.360significant a 1% and gamma is 0.830 is significant at 5% respectively. The cost efficiency index ranged from 0.124 to 0.851 with a mean of 0.766 implying that an average farm in the study has the scope for increasing cost efficiency by 23% given the existing technology. Cost of labour was significant at 1%, cost of fertilizer was significant at 5% implying that 1% increase in cost of labour will result to 4.4% increase in the cost of maize production. Whereas 5% increase in cost of fertilizer will result to 0.8% increase in the cost of maize production the study area. Results of inefficiency revealed that, age, extension visit, farming experience were all significant at 1%. While education status was significant at 5%.Based on the findings of this research, the study recommended that there is need for farmers to acquire basic education since education positively influences efficiency.
