Abstract
This study examined the effects Boko Haram shock on the livelihood of farming households in
Jere local government area of Borno State, Nigeria. Primary data were collected from 358
households which were randomly selected across Jere and administered structured
questionnaire. Descriptive statistics was used for the data analysis. The result shows that
majority (71.4%) of the respondents were male, 78.4% were married and the mean age is 39
years. The result also revealed that all the respondents have passed through a form of
education and majority (87.7%) of the respondents were farmers. Result of Boko haram effects
on livelihood of the farming household in the study area indicated that majority (85.7%) of the
sampled population agreed that they were experiencing insecurity shock. The results also
reveal that 33.3% were highly affected by the shock and 54.9% were moderately affected. Also,
on analysis of the nature of effects, majority (60.25%) of the farming households agreed that
they were affected by conflict/shock caused by the Boko haram insurgency, 34.2% were
affected by food insecurity shock and 5.6% reported livelihood deprivation. Also, the result
shows majority (79%) of respondents agreed that the Boko haram insurgence has hindered
them from farming activities. It can be concluded that Boko haram insurgency has greatly
affected farming households in the study area. It was recommended that farming households
should diversify their livelihood options and intervention agencies should provide assistance
to improve the livelihood of the farming households.
