Abstract
A study was carried out to determine the distribution of Aluminium, Iron, Calcium, Magnesium and
Manganese in Benchmark Soils across the four agro ecological zones of Northern Nigeria. Soil was
sampled from four regions in the savannah; Derived savannah, Southern Guinea savannah, Northern
Guinea Savannah and Sudan Savannah. In each zone, two soil orders were pre-identified using USDA
Soil Taxonomy Classification System. Soil samples were collected from each soil order total content
of Al, Fe, Ca, Mg and Mn were determined. The soils of the Sudan Savannah and Derived Savannah
were dominated by Ca with a concentration of 499.07 mgkg-1 and 537.71mgkg-1 respectively. Iron (Fe) was observed to be the dominating cations in the soils of the Northern Guinea savannah and Southern Guinea Savannah with a concentration of 132.01 mgkg-1 and 231.94 mgkg-1 . It was concluded that amount of precipitation received in the in the Sudan Savannah and Derived savannah was not enough to cause the leaching of these cations while redox reductions was mostly the occurring reactions for both the northern and Southern Guinea Savannah.
