Abstract
This study examined groundnut marketing margins and efficiency in Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State. Multistage sampling technique was used to select 80 groundnut marketers from the study area. Structured questionnaires were used to collect data for the study. Data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics, market margin and marketing efficiency. Results of the socioeconomic characteristics revealed that 92.5% were male, who are between the ages of 31-40 (42.5 %) years, 86.2% are married and majority had Quranic Education (53.7%). About 51.2% had farming as their other occupation, 58.7% had less than 10 years of experience on marketing, 73.75% fund their business from personal savings, and 65.0% were retailers and most of them do not belong to any cooperative society. The gross margin of marketing 50 kg bag was ₦2,790.00, while the marketing margin and marketing efficiency per 50 kg bag of groundnut were 27%and 126% respectively. Finance, inadequate storage facilities and insecurity are the major constraints faced by the marketers in the study area. It was recommended that channel formal agricultural credit at low rate to the marketers, tackling the issue of insurgency and the marketers should be encouraged to form cooperative organization.
