Abstract

Agriculture is an important sector which majority of the rural population in Africa depends on. In the wake of growing demand for food, the sector offers opportunities for farmers to sustain and improve their livelihoods and those of African nations. The role of Information and communication technology (ICT) in this regard cannot be over emphasized, especially as the society continues its unavoidable shift towards becoming a knowledge society that is driven by emerging communication technologies. Drawing on the existing literature, this paper examines the potentials of ICT in agricultural development; it looks at the challenges of ICT utilization in agriculture in Africa and whether the place of ICT in agricultural development in Africa is realistic or a mere imagination or myth. The paper concludes that there is no doubt that despite the several constraining factors; Africa is not left out in tapping from the enormous benefits of ICT to boost its agricultural sector. However, a lot still needs to be done to address the challenges so as to effectively harness the full benefits of ICT in Agriculture or else it would remain a mere imagination in other words, it would be impossible to harness the enormous benefits of ICT for agricultural development in Africa.
