It is published on line twice a year.</p> ASSESSMENT OF INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE OF FLOOD RISK REDUCTION IN GUYUK LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, ADAMAWA SATE, NIGERIA 2022-12-07T18:58:24+00:00 Abdullahi, J. Abdussalam, B. Odeh, C. E. <p>The study assessed indigenous knowledge of Flood Risk Reduction in Guyuk Local Government<br>Area, Adamawa State, Nigeria. The specific objectives of the study are; to identify the indigenous<br>knowledge of flood risk reduction in the area; examine people’s perception on adoption of<br>indigenous knowledge on flood risk reduction in the; assess the incidence of flood in the area;<br>examine the risk associated with flooding in the area and to determine effective strategies for the<br>adoption of indigenous knowledge of flood risk reduction in the area. Survey design was used for<br>the study. The target population for the study was all residents of Guyuk L.G.A. that are mostly<br>affected by flood which are Guyuk, Banjiram and Dukul. The sample size was determined through<br>cross sectional table study by Krejcie, and Morgan, (1970), which gave a sample of 380<br>respondents based on the population. A purposive random sampling technique was used, in the<br>distribution of the questionnaires. The instrument of data collection was a self-developed closed<br>ended questionnaire which was administered to the respondents. The data generated for the study<br>was analysed using descriptive statistics such as bar charts, pie charts, histogram, frequency count<br>and percentages. The findings of the study reveals that, the educational qualification of the<br>respondents was a pointer to their adoption of indigenous pro-active measures for tackling the<br>menace of flood when it does occur. Residence of Guyuk adopts digging of trenches and drainages<br>in their houses to allow easy flow of water thus abating severity of flood; the negative perception<br>of flood by the people is that it is a natural occurrence that should be the responsibility of<br>government only. The study also established that flood occur every year during the raining season,<br>affecting settlements along the floodplains. This result into hike or inflation in prices of stuffs;<br>destruction of lives and properties, contamination of water bodies leading to outbreak of<br>waterborne related diseases. The study therefore recommends that government should encourage<br>community cooperation and participation towards adoption of effective strategies for mitigating<br>flooding through education and sensitization of the public. The government should develop a wellintegrated<br>drainage and trenches in the area for free flow of water, and discourages building<br>houses in areas liable to floods.</p> 2022-12-04T20:34:05+00:00 Copyright (c) 2022 Journal of Agricultural Economics, Environment and Social Sciences DETERMINANTS OF TECHNICAL EFFICIENCY AND PROFITABILITY OF ANCHOR BORROWER MAIZE FARMERS IN GOMBE STATE, NIGERIA 2022-12-07T18:58:25+00:00 Biye, S. U. Adamu, Y. Yidi, M. S. Danladi, B. B. Sadiq, T. K. <p>The study assessed the impact of anchor borrowers program on crop production in Gombe State,<br>Nigeria. A total of 150 beneficiary farmers were sampled across the State and questionnaire were<br>administered via scheduled interview using multi-stage, cluster, purposive and simple random<br>sampling methods. The data collected were analyzed using stochastic frontier production function<br>and gross margin analysis. The result on the socioeconomic characteristics revealed that most of<br>the respondents were male (80.67%), married (79.33%) and experienced maize farmers (76.00%).<br>The respondents were technically efficient with a mean level of 72.00% and sum of the elasticity<br>estimates was found to be 2.1625 indicating increasing return to scale, the inefficiency parameters<br>conformed to the a priori expectation having carried the expected negative signs. Sigma squared<br>(σ2) was statistically significant at p &lt;0.001. Gamma (γ) was found to be 0.89 and was significant<br>at p &lt;0.001. The study further revealed that maize farming in the area was profitable with a gross<br>margin of ₦87,010.34/ha. The total revenue recorded was ₦267,543.12/ha, while the total<br>variable costs was ₦180,532.78/ha over a total land area of 981.3ha. Profitability index was 0.33<br>and return on investment was 0.48. There was a moderate availability and accessibility to credit<br>and inputs. Major constraints encountered include; untimely access to loan, bad road network,<br>high cost of fertilizer and labor. It can therefore, be deduced that the program had triggered more<br>farmers into production, even though their technical efficiency was below optimum likely owing<br>to constraints associated with; access to credit and input, and also poor access to extension<br>services. It was recommended that an effective extension service be put in place. S Abdullahi, A. <p>The study analyzed the determinants of socio-economic and institutional factors influencing<br>reusable Plastics Crate (RPCs) technology usage among fadama III Tomato Farmers in Kano<br>State, Nigeria. Multi stage sampling techniques were used for the study and primary data were<br>collected from a sample of three hundred and twelve (312) smallholder tomato farmers, using<br>structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency<br>and percentage, mean, and standard deviation and inferential statistics such as Double-Hurdle<br>model. Findings of the study showed that tomato farmers were young with an average of 41 years<br>and relative experience of 18 years in tomato farming and had an average of 12 persons per<br>household. The result of post-harvest storage in use revealed that 63.78% of the smallholder<br>tomato farmers were using TWBs to store their tomatoes. The remaining 36.22% were using RPCs<br>to store their tomato fruit in the study area. Double hurdle analysis result indicated that socioeconomic<br>factors such as farming experience, access to credit, income and marriage influence the<br>use of RPCs technology. On the other hand, household size, farm size, farming experience, income,<br>access to credit and marriage influence the intensity of using RPCs technology. M <p>The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of Vitex flower leaves on the haematological<br>indices and serum biochemistry of goats in the semi-arid zone of Nigeria. Fifteen growing kids<br>(15) with the average weight of 12kg were allocated to five (5) dietary treatment groups. Each<br>treatment consists of three (3) replicate in a completely randomized design. The five diets consisted<br>of various inclusion level of Vitex flower leaves designated as T0(Control), T1(20%), T2(30%),<br>T3(40%), T4(50%) respectively. The parameters determined in this study were haematology and<br>serum biochemistry. The results of haematological parameters showed significant difference<br>(P&lt;0.05) in packed cell volume (PCV), heamoglobin (Hb), white blood cell (WBC), red blood cell<br>(RBC), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular heamoglobin (MCH), mean<br>corpuscular heamoglobin concentration (MCHC). The serum biochemical indices show<br>significant difference (P&lt;0.05) in conjugate bilirubin (CB), total protein (TP), globulin (GLO),<br>Aspartate amino transfarase (AST), Alanine amino transfarase (ALK), Alkaline phosphatase (ALK<br>Phos), urea, creatinine, potassium. The result of this study shows that goats could tolerate up to<br>50% Vitex flower leaves without deleterious effect on the haematology and serum biochemistry.</p> 2022-12-04T21:38:02+00:00 Copyright (c) 2022 Journal of Agricultural Economics, Environment and Social Sciences LESSONS FROM COVID-19 LOCKDOWN TO MEASURES FOR OMICRON VARIANTS: THE CASE OF FOOD AND NUTRITION SECURITY IN NIGER STATE 2022-12-07T18:58:25+00:00 Ahmed, Abdul-Gafar <p>As nations all over the world are taking a second look at a lockdown for the vaccine-evasive<br>Omicron variants, it is important to note the effect of the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown on food and<br>nutrition security before taking any measure on Omicron variants containment policy in Nigeria.<br>The main objective of this paper is to provide empirical evidence on how COVID-19 lockdown<br>affected access to food and nutrition security in the State. Specifically, Likert scale was used to<br>identify the food nutrition that was most challenging to access, and Student’s t-test was applied to<br>test if there are differences in the impact of the lockdown between rural and urban households'<br>food and nutrition security. A total of 297 households were interviewed using a structured<br>questionnaire. A multistage sampling technique was used in the selection of the households in the<br>State. Findings showed that the households were affected differently by region. The urban region<br>experienced more difficulties obtaining carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, and vitamin foods than<br>the rural regions where some of these foods are produced. Also, clean water was more readily<br>available to urban than rural households. The increase in prices coupled with no/low income<br>threatened food and nutrition security. Adebayo, A. A. <p>This research work investigates the adaptation strategies to climate change by rural<br>communities along river Benue in Adamawa State Nigeria. A multistage sampling was also<br>employed, in the first stage three communities were randomly selected from each of the selected<br>LGAs and the second stage involves the allocation of four hundred and sixty-three interview<br>schedules to respondents. The data obtained were analysed using descriptive and inferential<br>statistics such as percentages, cross tabulations and Chi square. The result of the study showed<br>that farmers in the study area are aware of climate change uncertainties. The study also reveals<br>that farmers practiced various adaptation strategies.
